APPLY FOR WATER RIGHTS
WID is currently accepting applications for Irrigation Acres.

If you are a current irrigation water customer, contact the Water District Supervisor for your area.
No one is allowed to withdraw water from the WID for any purpose without having a valid agreement in place, illegal use or withdrawal of water without an agreement is subject to penalty by law.
Apply for water rights
Irrigation Acres: These are permanently attached to a parcel of land. Each parcel with irrigation acres has a specified number of acres upon which the landowner is entitled to apply water on. These acres are allocated from the district’s cap for irrigation acres. They will transfer with the land in the event of a sale, unless moved prior to a sale.
If acres are approved, the Capital Asset fee is $1,450 per acre + GST
Assessment for irrigation acres is $22.80 per acre + GST
Screening Fee is $2 per acre + GST (if parcel is serviced by a WID pipeline)
Pressure is $0.45 per psi/acre + GST (if parcel is serviced by a WID pipeline)
Terminable Acres: These are not permanently attached to a parcel of land. Each parcel with terminable acres has a specified number of acres which the landowner is entitled to apply water on. They do not transfer with the land in the event of a sale or transfer.
Irrigation acres and Terminable acres are only considered when there is an acre distribution by the district and cannot exceed the District’s cap of 110,000 acres (as of 2023).
There is no capital asset charge for terminable acres.
Assessment for terminable acres is $24.96 per acre + GST
Screening Fee is $2 per acre + GST
Pressure is $0.45 per psi/acre + GST
Annual Acres: At the discretion of the Board of Directors, annual acres may be issued for a season.
There is no capital asset charge for annual acres.
Assessment for annual acres is $28 per acre + GST
Screening Fee is $2 per acre + GST
Pressure is $0.45 per psi/acre + GST
Steps:
- Complete the form.
- The application is reviewed and the WID will assess the requested site location.
- If site can be serviced, the application goes to the Board for approval.
- If approved, the applicant comes to the WID office with a government photo ID and signs the document in person.
- If a parcel is being added or removed, as per the Alberta Irrigation Act, a notice for the request is placed in local newspapers by the WID, with 30 days to object.
- If no complaints are made to the WID, the request is submitted to the Secretariat of the Government of Alberta, Agriculture & Irrigation.
- The Secretariat will contact the WID with their decision, and the applicant will be notified.
- If approved, the applicant will be invoiced for the additional acres.
